Iris: Goddess of the Rainbow and Messenger

"[Hera] bids her own Iris gird herself with her wonted circles... [and so] the bright goddess leaves the pole and wings her way down her long arc to earth... Hither from the blue sky came in balanced flight the varicolored maid; the forests shine out, the shady glens smile upon the goddess, and smitten with her zones of radiance the palace starts ... [Iris] the golden fashioner of clouds ... Iris goes forth, and tricks out her beams, made dim by showers of rain." - Statius, Thebaid 10.80

# Name of Chosen Face: Monica Bellucci

# Character's Name: Iris

# Pantheon: Greek

# Personality: Iris has a very passive personality, she doesn't generally let things get to her which is both a blessing and a curse. She tends to let things just go their course. That doesn't mean she's indecisive or doesn't form opinions on things... she just doesn't like drama. In that respect, she tries to mediate/assist where necessary (taken from character history on LJ) and appropriate. [Etemology wise (from theoi.com): her name is commonly derived from erô eirô; so that Iris would mean "the speaker or messenger:" but it is not impossible that it may be connected with eirô, "I join," whence eirênê ; so that Iris, the goddess of the rainbow, would be the joiner or conciliator, or the messenger of heaven, who restores peace in nature.] Though sometimes she does get herself into situations she shouldn't have bothered getting involved in.

Iris has a knack for gossip. She both loves to hear it and share it. Sometimes viewed as a goddess of temperance, she tries not to over do things. In the end, no matter what, when the powers that be make requests of her, she quick to take to it.

# History: Iris is the daughter of Thaumas and Electra, is married to Zephyrus and with him has one son, Pothos. Iris is both a messenger goddess and goddess of the rainbow. In some stories she was also the deity who separated the soul from the body after death. Since the soul exits through the eyes, the colored part was named Iris.

In mythology she does whatever Hera or Zeus demands, in some instances including deliberate deceit of others with her words and appearance. Iris must be adept at shape-shifting as she had been asked by Hera to deceive Hypnos in the form of Nyx and also tricking Lykourgos (to attack Dionysos) in the form of Ares. She also took to some shape-shifting for her own mischievous means (see the Aeneid for details)
